Food Intolerance Testing: At A New Leaf, we routinely perform IgG Food Allergy Tests:

When our body encounters an allergen, our immune system commonly produces one of the two antibodies, IgE or IgG. The common peanut allergy or ragweed allergy produces an immediate bodily reaction, due to the IgE production. Often food sensitivities (that can manifest as headaches, acne, mood disorders, eczema, joint pain, weight gain and digestive disturbances) are due to IgG production. IgG reactions may not be immediately obvious and the reaction can occur hours to days after exposure to the allergen. This is why IgG tests are so important. Many people are amazed at the benefits seen once their intolerances are discovered and avoided!

Adrenal Functional Panel:

The adrenal function profile is a means of measuring your body's ability to cope with stress. When your body experiences stress of any kind, it produces the hormone cortisol. Allergies, fatigue, muscle aches and pains, low sex drive, impaired memory and inability to cope can all be symptoms of cortisol deficiency. Whereas, irritability, weight gan and the waist, high blood pressure, sleep disturbances, and bone loss may be sings of cortisol excess. The body goes through 3 stages during periods of chronic stress: Alarm,Resistance and Exhaustion. This test evaluates the stage your body is in and allows the Doctors at A New Leaf to customize a program that targets your specific stressors and your body's reaction to them.

Female Panel:

Cortisol, DHEAs, estradiol, progesterone and testosterone are all key hormonal players in women's health. Imbalances in these hormones may be the cause of weight gain, infertility, depression, menstrual irregularities, hot flashes, sleep disturbances and breast cancer. This test will aid your Naturopathic Doctor in uncovering hormonal imbalances and allow you to better understand how your body is functioning. Intelligent hormone-rebalancing protocols will be put in place for you based on the results of this test.

Hair Mineral Analysis:

Our bodies deposit both heavy metals and minerals in our hair as it grows. Taking a small hair sample and sending it to Rocky Mountain Analytical for testing can help us better understand nutrient deficiencies or excesses in our bodies as well as heavy metal overload. This test can be the basis of an individualized treatment protocol geared toward balancing nutrients and detoxifying the body.

What is a Naturopathic Doctor?

Naturopathic Doctors are primary health-care providers that are trained as specialists in the treatment and prevention of disease through natural means. They assess the whole person and provide a full range of diagnostic tests to discover the cause of the illness. Patients are encouraged to become active participants in their own healthcare. Each person is encouraged to ask as many questions as they like in order to best understand their condition. The Doctors at A New Leaf focus on the “why” of disease rather that the “what” and work to uncover the source of illness while treating its symptoms.

Who benefits from seeing a Naturopathic Doctor?

A person of any age, with virtually any health concern can benefit from Naturopathic medical care. Healthy individuals seeking to improve their state of well-being and prevent future diseases, acute illness sufferers (ex. cold, flu, or headaches) looking to alleviate their symptoms immediately or those with chronic illnesses are all part of the client base at A New Leaf Naturopathic Care.

What can I expect on my first visit with a Naturopathic Doctor?

Naturopathic medicine requires clients to become active participants in their own health. Before the first visit you will be required to fill out a comprehensive intake form. During the one hour initial consultation, your Naturopathic Doctor will seek to gain a better understanding of your healthcare issues by gathering information on your heath history, including your diet, sleep, lifestyle habits, stressors, exercise and your family history. She will assess your short and long term goals and work to meet them on time. Physical exams are performed to gather objective data and diagnostic tests are offered in order to gain more insight into your health. A treatment plan is designed based on your background and lifestyle. Subsequent visits are 30-45 minutes in length.

How are they licensed?

Naturopathic Doctor's in Ontario are required to pass a North American licensing exam (NPLEX) and Ontario Board Exams with a minimum score of 75%. After completing this requirement, they are eligible to register with the Board of Director's of Drugless Therapy - Naturopahty (BDDT-N). Once registered, they are given a license number that is required to be displayed on each invoice, in order for patients to be reimbursed from their insurance company. Dr. Melissa Piercell, ND is licensed to practice Naturopathy in the province of Ontario, and is a member of the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors (OAND). For more information on licensing please call the BDDT-N at 1-877-361-1925.

Do Naturopathic Doctors interact with other health care professionals?

Yes! Dr. Melissa Piercell is a strong believer of integrative medicine. As she believes a team approach is most beneficial for her patients. Referral to other practitioners, such as medical doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists, osteopaths and midwives, when necessary enables a holistic effective treatment approach to your concerns.

Is a visit with a Naturopathic Doctor covered by OHIP?

While naturopathic medical care is not covered by OHIP, many extended healthcare plans provide coverage for Naturopathic treatments and acupuncture performed by a Naturopathic Doctor. Contact your extended healthcare provider to determine your level of Naturopathic Medical coverage.

Do I need a referral?

No. As a Naturopathic Doctor, Dr. Melissa Piercell is a primary health-care provider. Referrals are not needed and patients can call or email directly to book their own appointments.
